Warning: Thieves Are Now Targeting Houses With Doorbell Cameras... Here's What You Should Do

Author

By Paul McGreggor. on Dec 19, 2025

If you own a doorbell camera or are considering buying one, read this short article before you do anything else.

I'm 61 years old.

I've lived in the same house in Leicester for 27 years.

Never had a problem or felt unsafe.

Until last Tuesday night...

My wife and I had driven to Nottingham to visit our son and the grandkids.

We don't see them much since they moved away, so when they invited us for dinner, we went.

By the time we got home, it was gone 12:30 AM.

We pulled up to the house, everything looked normal.

Lights off.
Front door shut.
Ring doorbell glowing blue.

I unlocked the door and stepped into the hallway.

That's when I felt something wet under my shoes....

I Flicked The Light On And My Heart Stopped

Muddy footprints.

Everywhere.

In the hallway, across the carpet, up the stairs, in our bedroom.

My wife screamed:

"Paul, call the police NOW"

Someone had broken in while we were away.

My vintage watch collection — GONE.

My wife's jewelry box — emptied.

Our bedroom — ransacked.

They took keys, cash, and things our kids had given us over the years.

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold my phone to dial 999.

What happened next changed everything I thought I knew about home security....

I Was Sure We Had Them On Camera.... Until I Opened The App

The police arrived in about 15 minutes.

First thing the officer asked:

"Do you have any cameras? Ring doorbell? Anything like that?"

I immediately pulled up the Ring app on my phone.

I was certain we'd have them on video.

We'd paid £130 for that doorbell after a close friend had some trouble at her house last year.

I'd been paying £10 a month for cloud storage ever since.

But when we checked the footage, my heart sank...

No faces. No details. Nothing.

Just a few grainy black-and-white shadows.

Two men had walked right up our driveway, straight past the doorbell, and it hadn't captured a single clear frame.

The officer looked at me and said something I'll never forget:

"These doorbell cameras don't really protect you. They're good for showing you who delivered a parcel, that's about it. Burglars know exactly where your blind spots are when they see one. Even if it does capture something, the black-and-white video doesn't help us identify suspects."

I felt sick.

I could barely sleep that night.

I'd spent all that money thinking I was protecting us.

But it captured absolutely NOTHING when my house was actually being burgled!

Our Neighbour Showed Us Something That Shocked Us All

The police had knocked on our neighbour Alan's door who's a retired police officer.

He shocked us all when he said:

"I've got them on my camera. Both of them."

He showed me the footage on his phone.

Two men in Nike hoodies.

You could see their faces.
The logos on their clothing.

All in FULL color even though it was pitch black outside.

I asked what kind of system he had.

I assumed it must've cost a fortune.

He laughed and said:

"Nah, it's my SafeView window camera. It sits inside, hidden and cost me under £50. No monthly fees either."

It sounded too good to be true, but I ordered two the next morning...

The Ugly Truth About Doorbell Cameras...

After that night, I started researching.

Turns out, doorbell cameras are designed to fail from the start.

They'll also charge you every month just to use it.

Here's what's wrong:

The Night Vision Is Useless

Most use Infrared at night so at night you get that grainy black-and-white footage. You can't see faces or details. So it's useless for police to identify someone.

They're Mounted Outside

They show burglars exactly where your security starts and ends. Plus, because they're outside it's easy to cover the lens or rip them off the wall.

Only Cover Your Front Door

75% of break-ins happen through the backdoor. Doorbells only capture your doorstep. This leaves you completely vulnerable where it matters the most.

Charge You a Fee Every Month.. Forever!

You buy the camera but they'll charge you £96/year forever just to access your own footage. If you stop paying it becomes useless!

I Ditched My Doorbell For This Window Camera...

SafeView sits inside your window.

Hidden and out of reach

It's what real security should be, STEALTH!

It solved every problem I had with my Ring doorbell:

Full Colour Night Vision

It uses Starlight Sensors for full colour night vision. You can see faces and details that police can actually use to identify criminals. It records in 2K quality with 4x zoom.

Protects My Entire Home (without extra costs)

I can watch the front, back and even side with multiple cameras not just my doorstep. They all connect to the free app so there's no extra fees the more you buy.

Hidden Out Of Sight

It sits inside my window so it can't be damaged, touched or stolen. Burglars won't notice they're being recorded until it's too late.

NO Monthly Fees or Subscriptions

It saves everything onto a memory card that's included. So you actually own your footage instead of having to pay every month. Buy it once and it's yours.

I'm Not Great With Tech But It Was Really Easy

They took me less than 15 minutes to get both of them up and running:

1) Peel the backing off.
2) Stick it to the window.
3) Connect to WiFi.

That's it.

No drilling holes. No tools. No confusion.

The difference was unbelievable.

Now when I check my phone, I can see the entire front and back of our house in crystal-clear color, even at 2AM.

I can see faces.
I can see details
.

I set it to alert only for human motion, so I don't get notifications for passing cars, cats, or rubbish blowing past.

I cancelled my Ring subscription the same day.

That was £96 a year I'll never have to pay again.

The Police Came Back Yesterday With An Update

They'd used Alan's footage and arrested two men.

Without that footage, I dread to think what would've happened.

I don't think we'd be able to sleep knowing they were still out on the streets.

We still haven't got any of our stuff back yet.

But we sleep a better knowing we'll have crystal-clear proof if anything ever happens again.

Has anyone got one of these? it says no monthly fees but surely you need cloud storage to actually view the footage? How does that work then? I've been stung by Ring's £10/month so genuinely curious if this is just marketing speak.

I was skeptical about the exact same thing! There's NO fees at all, it records straight onto a little SD card that it comes with.. I've had mine 3 months now and haven't paid a penny beyond the initial purchase. Cancelled my Ring subscription a week later

How long did it take to arrive? Also is it easy to set up or do I need to use a drill and tools?

Took about 7ish days for mine to come. Setup took me maybe 10 minutes. You literally just peel the backing off, stick it to your window, download the app and connect to WiFi. No drilling or tools needed.

Currently paying £96 a year for Ring and it's a scam! If you stop paying it's basically a fancy ornament. Will give this a try because I'm about done with doorbell cameras

Stupid question maybe but if it's stuck to the window won't the glass reflection ruin the footage? We've got double glazing and I'm worried it'll just record reflections of our living room instead of outside. Has anyone actually tested this or is it just theory?

Yeah it works perfectly fine through double glazing. No issues with my one. you can't even tell it's shot through glass. Just make sure the window is clean when you stick it on
